History Tour: Namyoung Democratic Human Rights Memorial

On June 29th, the International Strategy Center lead a tour of the Democratic Human Rights Museum in the Namyeong neighborhood of Seoul. The Democratic Human Rights Memorial was used in 1976 as the Anti-Communist Division of National Security. Posing the “Ocean Research Institute,” it was used to interrogate and suppress democratic forces — many of whom were young students — critical of the Chun Doo-Hwan dictatorship. At the Democratic Human Rights Museum, we visited the rooms of torture and discussed the history of Korea’s democracy.
